Duplicate content
[edit]We have File:The ambassador's wife (IA ambassadorswife00gore).pdf and we also have Category:The Ambassador's Wife (1863) which is the exact same pdf from Duke University but in 264 separate jpg files. Is it necessary to have both, or can we just keep the pdf and delete the jpg files? Geoffroi 00:54, 20 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Geoffroi: Both have their uses. The jpg files are quite a bit larger (the first page being 2,912 × 4,368 vs. the pdf being 552 × 925), and therefore are presumably higher quality. Wikisource would want the pdf. I would keep both, but perhaps cross-reference them. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:57, 20 September 2025 (UTC)
- I've created Category:The Ambassador's Wife (1863, jpeg files) as a subcategory of Category:The Ambassador's Wife (1863). I just wanted to make sure the pdf would be easy to find. Geoffroi 19:20, 20 September 2025 (UTC)
Request for suppression of deleted file name
[edit]Hello,
I am requesting permanent removal of the deleted file name from Wikimedia Commons and its logs.
The file was deleted for copyright reasons, and the name refers to a person from my family. For privacy reasons, I kindly ask for suppression (oversight) of the filename so it is no longer visible in the deletion logs.
Thank you very much for your help. Aladai12 (talk) 01:59, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Aladai12: did you email the address shown in COM:Oversight? Abzeronow (talk) 02:29, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
Simulation or colorized images of historical tropical cyclones
[edit]Hi:
I would like to know what is the policy of Commons on simulated satellites photos, such as File:Typhoon Nancy 1961-09-13 0300Z (Simulated Image and Infrared Version).png when there was no satellite images at that time, or the colorisation and reconstruction of such images from black and white satellite images (like File:Typhoon Nora 1973-10-05 1200Z (colorized).png) with AI?

- We seem to have had a problem with a number of these recently. In general I think they should be avoided and are not in project scope. Speculatively there might be a case where one might be more useful than harmful, though I can't think of an example of such a hypothetical at the moment. They certainly should never be used in an article as if they were real historic images, and any use should be very clearly labeled fictional/hypothetical. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:06, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- I have nominated those 2 files for deletion discussion. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:08, 22 September 2025 (UTC)

I came here to suggest a temporary block for User:Kattie Katey, who keeps uploading fictional storm images as if they are real. From their comments on image deletion pages, it doesn't seem that the user has a good grasp for handling images. Hurricanehink (talk) 16:27, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
Done I've indefinitely blocked Kattie because of the unacceptable comments at various DRs and their trolling behavior. IMO they're not here to contribute. Bedivere (talk) 19:04, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- With no comment on these particular images: I would think that a visualization reconstructed from data and identified as such could be a perfectly valid way to present information about a particular storm. @Infrogmation: from what you say above, I suspect you disagree. Could you elaborate? - Jmabel ! talk 20:08, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- I said that there might be a hypothetical case of something similar being useful, which is why I stopped short of saying that anything of this nature should be prohibited. The Kattie images above IMO were misleading at best tending towards fraudulent/fantasy glurge. If we have a case of "a visualization reconstructed from data and identified as such" I'm quite willing to take a look at it and share my opinion, if I have any, after I look at it. That seems a hypothetical future possible issue I suggest we deal with when/if it arises. I think the narrower issues of the images mentioned here can be closed as resolved. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:28, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- Fully agree. The images from this issue seem to be entirely based on personal speculation, rather than based on actual data. The Nora image bore no resemblance to the supposed source. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:34, 22 September 2025 (UTC)

Urgent Request: Deletion of User Page Containing My Real Name Without Consent Now
[edit][Account name suppressed, admins may see it at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Administrators%27_noticeboard&oldid=1089616910]
Hello, A user page was created with my real name without my consent: [Account name suppressed, admins may see it at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Administrators%27_noticeboard&oldid=1089616910]. This page appears in Google search results and exposes my personal identity, which is a serious privacy violation and misuse of my identity. I did not create this account. Therefore, I formally request that administrators delete or anonymize this page immediately to protect my privacy. If this is not resolved promptly, I will be forced to escalate this matter legally as a violation of my privacy rights. Thank you for your urgent assistance. Sincerely, Concerned individual Sohail7677 (talk) 17:46, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- [Account name suppressed, admins may see it at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Administrators%27_noticeboard&oldid=1089616910] does not exist, and the user has no edits on any wiki. The user talk page has no messages except a generic welcome message, which was left by a bot in 2016. I don't think there's anything to be done, especially since that account may have been created by a different individual with that name, and it is not associated with any personally identifying information.
- Please also note that legal threats are not permitted on Commons. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:39, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Sohail7677: That user could be renamed as it has no edit on any Wikimedia project (or you could take it over), but it can't be only from a request by a pseudonymous account. You have to send some ID proof by email to
stewards@wikimedia.org. Please see m:Steward requests. Yann (talk) 18:57, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
Not done Nothing to be done from us. I thought of deleting the talk page of the user but what could that solve at all. Bedivere (talk) 19:00, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
Pending deletion request: misleading image

Is a blocked user allowed to blank their user talk page?
[edit]Special:Diff/1090203773. Is this OK, or should it be reverted and talk page access taken away? - Jmabel ! talk 18:56, 24 September 2025 (UTC)

Another Pending Deletion Request
[edit]Dear admins, concerning another deletion request has been pending since 15 September 2025, could someone please look into it? The picture this time actually shows W.E.B. Du Bois. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Marcus_Eli_Ravage.png Thank you very much! Tartigradesinspace (talk) 20:53, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
- There are even deletion requests from 17 May 2025 still pending[1], but admins are aware of that and will deal with them in due time :), there's probably no need to report the DRs here unless it's something urgent. Nakonana (talk) 21:39, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
Hide versions of file
[edit]Hello. The 2 previous versions of File:Three Icelandic phonebooks.jpg contain GPS coordinates that the uploader @Steinninn wants to hide, as evidenced by their usage of {{Location withheld}}. I uploaded a new version without the GPS coordinates. Would it be possible to remove access to the 2 previous versions of the file? Thanks. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 00:35, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
Wikimedia VRT release generator
[edit]Hi, thereǃ
I work in a library that holds the license of a journal that no longer exists. The administration of library wanted to share the articles contained in this journal at Commons. I uploaded the articles and marked the option of a license via Wikimedia VRT release generator, which states that, if there's no e-mail with a consent after 30 days, it will be deleted. However, the e-mail is been sent now and the AntiCompositeBot marked to be deleted after 7 days.
I have to put the license after (and, if so, can I delet the bot's mark?) or I just have to wait and hope that the permission is accepted sooner than the elimination? Thank you ̴̴̴ VictorAyabe (talk) 16:57, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
- Hello @VictorAyabe, you will need to include a license to your files while waiting for permission to be accepted by VRT, so you should ask your administration which license they are planning to release these file. However, if you are not exactly sure which license to use, please include a license that you think is the most likely one your files will have, and then you can change it if it doesn’t match the one as accepted by VRT.
- Once you added the license template to your files, feel free to delete the “no license” tag by AntiCompositeBot. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 17:17, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
- Alright, thank youǃ ̴̴ VictorAyabe (talk) 17:18, 25 September 2025 (UTC)
